I went to Columbine high school and I knew both Dylan, and Eric. You are fucking liars, Dylan hated racism, as well as Eric. Mock war games? What kid doesn't do that? I played "war" until I was 14 years old. Dylan and Eric were not fucking racists. Do you really want to know why that shit went down? It was because every fucking day we all were fucking picked on by stupid ass fucking want-to-be gangsters. People that couldn't think outside the shopping mall. Sensationalist assholes like you. I lost 3 friends in that shooting and my brother. You fucking weren't even there. Not only that you didn't know Dylan and you didn't know Eric. So before you go running around lying and talking about shit you have no idea about. Do your fucking homework and look at both sides. I know that this is a site dedicated to African-American issues, racism namely. But who is discriminating? Did you even talk to any of Dylans' friends before writing this article? Or did you just hear the word nigger and become incapable of finding the real facts. Dylan was not a racist neither was Eric. If either of them used the word nigger while killing someone (which they didn't, I was in the library and the cafeteria) it would only be because they, as well as myself, were fucking endlessly harassed by fucking idiots who watched too many Tu-Pac videos and decided to "start jackin" and be a "thug". So fuck you. You aren't a fucking victim. Subvert the dominant stereotype. Thanks alot for turning Columbine into something you can use to create more conflict instead of learn from. Fuck you asshole. I hope you respect your dead because you disrespected ours. Thanks for nothing,

Hello- I've just discovered this website and find it extremely educational and informative. I will be a regular visitor!!!!!! And I'll pass the word.

I am a voracious reader and student of Afrikan life. This subject of African involvement in slavery has always troubled and embarrased me as I'm sure it has many others. However, finding answers to exactly who (Afrikan)was involved, why, and to what extent, has always been pretty cloudy, making it easy for the real culprits (Europeans ) to point the finger so as to take the focus off them.

Well I think I'm beginning to get some real understanding from a book I'm reading. I haven't finished it yet so I'll only comment on what I feel absolutely clear on and that is this:

First of all, SOME Afrikans were involved unfortunately, but Europeans FORCED their way into the hinterland when they felt the time was right. By the time these African slavers realized that the real trick was on them, it was to late, they had become to disorganized, lazy, and drunk to do anything about it. But despite some African involvement, IN NO WAY DO THEY (Europeans) GET OFF THE HOOK!!!!!!!
This is a mistake we've made to many times, being to agreeable and giving them the benefit of the doubt, so they can keep us on the defensive.

And who were these Afrikans involved? MAINLY IT WAS A CLASS THING. The AFRICAN PETITE BOURGEOISIE Class (Chiefs included) who time after time threw away chances for real independence .

And why did they throw away their peoples (Afrikans) freedom and best interest?
Plain and simply PERSONAL GREED and PERSONAL GAIN.

So , when we (AFRIKANS) comment on this matter, it's very important that we understand and specify the CLASS aspect rather than just saying "Africans" did it. True they may have been Africans ethnically but they weren't true Afrikans because they put their CLASS INTEREST above the collective interest of their people. Truly this made them even worse than the Europeans they were puppets for.

And equally important is that we recognize these SPECIFICS because the same game keeps getting played on us over and over again today, which is why we stay in the hole. Instead of always BY DEFAULT blaming it on the white man, WE NEED TO RECOGNIZE SPECIFICALLY "WHO" KEEPS DOING IT TO US, DIRECTLY. These same CLASS MINDED NEGROES always seem to get the "so-called" top positions and top jobs (I wonder why?),and Black people continue to get the same results since 1492.

Until we can discipline ourselves to stop being hypnotized by "Bling-Bling" (trinkets), Mercedes Benzes,Lies, Leftovers, and European Pseudo Approval, we won't be going anywhere soon.

WHY DO WE AMERICANS HAVE TO CONTINUALLY SEPERATE OURSELVES INTO GROUPS THAT ARE CALLED: WHITE AMERICANS, BLACK AMERICANS, CHINESE AMERICANS, AFRO AMERICANS, JAPANESE AMERICANS, IRISH AMERICANS, MEXICAN AMERICANS, NATIVE AMERICANS, ETC.

I THOUGHT THAT BEING BORN IN AMERICA MADE YOU AN AMERICAN PERIOD.

WE ARE PRATICING SEPERATION AND SEGRATION WHEN WE DON'T BE JUST PLAIN " AMEICANS".

I DID NOTICE THAT THE SEVEN LAWS MENTIONED IN THE ARTICLE FAILED TO INCLUDE BUILDING A STRONGER UNITED AMERICA AND FAILED TO GET ABOVE THE COMMUNITY LEVEL.

GET REAL. WE ARE ALL " AMERICANS " AND SHOULD BE THANKFUL THAT WE WERE BORN IN A FREE NATION .

NONE OF US LIVING TODAY WERE SLAVES, SO WHY KEEP THAT PART OF THE PAST ALIVE TODAY ? ? ?

PRAY THAT GOD WILL BLESS US AS AMERICANS AND NOT TRY AND SEPERATE US INTO GROUPS IN HEAVEN.

As a young "white" (define white however you will) guy in modern America, I have experienced more racism from African-Americans that you can imagine, most of it in the name of correcting past wrongs. I know, you have cleverly twisted the definition of racism to exempt yourselves - in your spin on the concept - from even being capable of racism, but there it is. Slant it the way you will, black Americans have, in my personal experience, been far more racist than non-black Americans, whether they are Asian, Hispanic, Anglo, German, Slavic, Jewish - what have you. You seem to sanctify the concept of black victimization without even admitting the possibility that people of non-African origin in this country can claim to have suffered from unjust race-based policies, decisions, behaviors, or attitides. When you open your sacred cathedral to admit non-African victims of racism, please put me down at the top of the list for canonization. Alan in NC.

I am troubled by the article about Mr. Powell. To me Mr. Powell is a living example of what any man/woman can be if they will exert themselves. To say that Mr. Powell is anything less than he is only weakens your position in the world as black people. If a man like Powell is talked down by his own black community, it seems to me that other young black people would be drained of the desire to succeed. First I would like to make clear that I am white and may not understand all I know about black people, but I understand people and there is absolutely no argument, that is what you are. So if one person succeeds and is only discredited by his or her peers, what is the point in all the work? If you intend to be successful as black people, then your successes should be exalted, especially by your own people. You can take this as coming from a dumb honky, you can hit delete and not be troubled with it. However you cannot hit delete and erase mistakes in life and to talk down your own black successes is to play into the hands of the Democrats that are working so hard to keep you as their own personal voting base. Are they worried about you as a people, I don't think so. Moreover they are worried about power, color means little to them, votes and conniving ways to extract them from given races and religions is their main goal. Mr. Powell is a great credit to the black people and should be treated as such, to do less is to shoot yourself in the foot, maybe both feet. I am so tired of the democratic party whinning and moaning because they do not have control. I would not vote democrat for any reason. They are all a bunch of liberal whimps with no agenda except to attack the republicans for any reason.
I wish they would be busy about the affairs of the people instead of trying to gain the support of any group that will help their cause; whatever that is? Since their chief (Bill Clinton) they sure have not displayed any morals. It seems that anything goes as long as it will get a vote. I wish the black community could see through their politics and realize that they are just being used. Please stand for what is right not what is politically correct. All of the people could complain about something but it sure would be nice if this whole thing was not about how much I can gain but what is best for the american people. I sure hope Trent Lott does not yield to pressure and stands firm in the face of the enemies of (division and defeat.) thanks

Thank you for providing information about the real history of slavery. For many years I was taught our family never owned slaves. As I research my family tree I discovered several African families with the same name. (McGaha and McGaughey) Do you have any information regarding black Americans with the name McGaha or McGaughey? I found where James Withrow McGaughey Jr. killed a Klan member (DeCatur DePriest) in Rutherford County NC. after the Civil War. The murder happened after DePriest and other Klan members horse-whipped a McGaughey woman for teaching a ex-slave to read. James fled with his family to Tenn. a warrant and bounty was issued for his arrest. The bounty was for $200. He was never located or arrested.  Pat McGaha

This was the worst piece of guesswork I've ever read. The author assues that Patriarchy is good and the proper way of society when that is in fact a very European/Western ideal. Matriarchy is very common in Africa, in Ghana where I lived Matriarchy is a very strong part of the culture. It is a balanced way of giving men and women power in different ways. I implore the writer to do much more research into African tribal life, particularly of the Fante and Akan peoples of Ghana. Also look at how European philosphy has become so ingrained in the author's thinking that the assumption of patriarchal superiority is not even questioned. Go back to your roots!

Your site is bullshit, complete bullshit. I am a white, middle class college student at the University of Pittsburgh. I am sickened by the reverse racism which I am subjected to every day. The amount of african american students on scholarships and grants is ridiculous. Blacks with half the gpa which I have earned and parents in the same tax bracket as mine are eligible for and recieve state and federal funds amounting to as much as half tuition. Thats upwards of $7,000. I'm so sick of hearing this inequality bullshit.

I am so thankful that you have the full letter on your website. I had the pleasure of reading this letter while on a trip to New York. I know you may be wondering why I said "pleasure" and I did because it has allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of my people. I am seeking out greater knowledge and truly asking the questions, "how do we now change what has been going on with us for over 300 years"? "How do I, as an educator help my students (babies) understand that they are beautiful, intelligent, important parts of society as a whole"? How do I help them to understand their own self-worth? How do I help them understand this letter and what they need to do to break this cycle of mental, spiritual, physical, emotional, financial slavery they are enduring and have watched their families endure since the beginning of our time here in the states? I am going to continue to pass this on and maybe just maybe others will read it, comprehend it, talk about it, and try to help make a change.  It starts with just one person. So again, I thank you. Be blessed in all that you do!

This subject and conversation in this article seems to be unneccesary. I cannot think of one black superstar who in any way supports the myth that the writer is so concerned about.

In fact, the proliferation of blacks in sports has demonstrated that there are alot of black, athletes in the vernacular of the ghetto, who are "garbage". One of the reasons they are garbage is because they clearly lack mental toughness. Branch Rickey had an opportunity to choose many "superior" athletes form the Negro Leagues, but he chose Jackie Robinson for his "mental toughness". When one considers Frank Robinson, Bob Gbson, Gale Sayers, Jim Brown, Bill Russell, anyone who has an intimate understanding of the history of athletics has already come to the conlusion that character is better measure of one's success than pure athletic ability.

If whites are still stuck on bigoted stereotypes, it is disapointing, but I am not surprised. If we as blacks are still ignorantly embracing such stereotypes, woe be unto those persons, for they have learned nothing from our history. I, for one believe that we as blacks have progressed far beyond such ill-informed opinions. There are certainly more important things to discuss.

IF WE (U.S.) WERE TO GO TO WAR WITH THE AFRICAN CONTINENT .WE WOULD NOT HAVE A TARGET RICH ENVIROMENT(LIKE AIR BASES OR FRONT LINES TO FACE) AND WOULD HAVE TO SWITCH TO GUERILLA WARFARE WHICH WITH YOUR ZEAL WOULD BE A QUAGMIRE! HOW EVER SOMALIA WAS SUPPOSED TO BE A PEACEKEEPING MISSION OR SO THEY SAY I THINK WE SHOULD ALL JUST GET ALONG .BUT WE NEED PEOPLE LIKE YOU IN THE ARMED FORCES. PLUS BODY ARMOR YOU WOULD MAKE ANY COUNTRY 10 TIMES AS STRONG. THAT'S A COMPLIMENT IF YOU PLEASE DON'T MIND

I agree that the black family is being ripped apart by societal structures and institutions i.e. the welfare system that make black families financially dependent on the state allowing the state to impose itself on black families and obstruct black agency. The prison system also separate black males from the black family. Mr. Tommy Ates analysis of interracial dating as an additional cause of disturbance for the black family is problematic. According to Mr. Ates, black males are drawn to interracial dating as a way to elevate their social and perhaps economic stance in this country. He explains further, that black women are left to uphold the black family and black identity in the absence of black male partners (70% black single mom households). But Ates encourages black women to explore their worlds as much as the black man does, because racial and cultural mixing is a natural process that can not be avoided. However, Mr. Ates does not present a viable argument for interracial dating as a solution to the dilemma facing the black family. Moreover, he does not explain how interracial dating will benefit black women. Maybe Mr. Ates assumes that black women need to tap alternative sources (of men), since black men are not as available. Black women need financial, political, and psychological freedom not just a '"big dick" lying around the house.
