McDonald's,2.) Pepsi and 3.) Coca Cola provided funding to television programs in Latin America and Japan that depicted African Americans in a negative light. In addition, 4.) Nabisco and 5.) Goodyear actually had television commercials where African Americans were depicted as cannibals and were made fun of because of their African features (their lip size in particular). Although Goodyear did apologize and pull their commercial off of the air, the other companies chose not to. Nabisco justified their actions by saying that no one in Peru objected to the commercial, therefore they should not have to take it off the air. We can no longer tolerate this racial insensitivity or support companies that promote racist ideologies! Please remember that our dollar can go a long way.
1) Nabisco: A group of blacks dressed as natives with war paint and bones in their noses dance around white hostages tied to stakes. The blacks are cannibals and are going to eat the white people until they receive some tasty Nabisco treats.
2) Goodyear/NTW: A white man and a black man are talking about tires and how sturdy, they are. The white man says the tires are as thick as the black man's lips. The black man is really a man in black face with a buckwheat wig on and fake large lips and large eyes.
3) Television Shows: Several of the popular Latin variety shows feature blacks as cannibals and animals.
a) One show contained a skit in which a white man went to a brothel to get a prostitute. There are several Hispanic prostitutes and one black prostitute. The black prostitute tells the man she is very passionate and would love to just eat him up; the man becomes very excited and tries to pay the Madame for the black girls services. The Hispanic prostitutes and the audience are laughing and try to convince him not to go with the black prostitute because she literally means she will EAT the man, she is a cannibal.
b) Another variety show displayed several people dancing in a big musical number. Michael Jackson (a poor imitation) is dancing and singing with a child next to him who is supposed to be his son. The child has the Michael J. curly hair, socks, glove, military sequined jacket but the child has black face on. Michael explains in the song that he wants the white plastic surgeon in the number, to fix his son, he looks too black. He wants him to bleach his skin, straighten his hair, reduce the size of his lips and CUT OFF HIS TAIL (at which point he turns the child around to reveal a monkey's tail).
4) Coke, Pepsi and McDonalds sponsored these variety shows. I believe McDonalds had their own black face commercials but I can't recall specifically what they contained. Their excuse (all of the companies stated above) was that they depend on the home offices in Latin America and Japan to market their products to the culture and these cultures do not consider these things offensive.
If you'd like to see some of these things first hand, check out some of the Spanish television stations that run on local access or cable. Many of these are sent via satellite to the US and although you may not be able to understand the language the visuals will come across loud and clear.
