$1.5 million for Oscar

NEW YORK, June 13 (UPI) _ It looks like Michael Jackson will be taking home an Academy Award, but it won't be for the pop music or bizarre performances that have made him famous. The enigmatic singer plunked down more than $1.5 million at Sotheby's auction on Saturday for the Best Picture Oscar producer David O. Selznick won for "Gone With the Wind."

Mbeki victory echoed by parliament
PRETORIA, South Africa, June 14 (UPI) _ Thabo Mbeki (Monday) received an early birthday gift when the reconvened South African parliament unanimously elected him as the country's new president, formally ending the Nelson Mandela era. Mbeki, who turns 57 on Wednesday, was the presidential candidate of the ruling African National Congress which came within one seat of an overwhelming two-thirds majority in the 400- seat National Assembly.

Clinton telephones Britain's Blair
WASHINGTON, June 13 (UPI) _ President Clinton telephoned British Prime Minister Tony Blair (Sunday) to brief him on his earlier call with Russian President Boris Yeltsin. A spokesman said Clinton wanted to update the British leader on the progress of talks to include Russia in the Kosovo peacekeeping force. Clinton heads to Europe Tuesday evening to attend a summit of the G-7 nations and Russia.

US gas prices continue their decline
LOS ANGELES, June 13 (UPI) _ The national average price for a gallon of gasoline fell nearly 3 cents in the past three weeks, according to the latest Lundberg Survey. Trilby Lundberg says (Sunday) the overall price for all grades of gasoline including self-service and full-service is now a $119.02, down 2.78 cents from the May 21 survey. Lundberg tells UPI the rate of decline is expected to slow because of production cuts implemented by the OPEC nations and other oil producing countries.

Albright: No Russian sector in Kosovo
WASHINGTON, June 13 (UPI) _ Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said (Sunday) she is confident an agreement will be worked out with Moscow on Russia's role in Kosovo. Albright said on NBC's "Meet the Press" that the Russians won't get an exclusive sector in the province and will have to work within NATO's command system.
