NEW YORK, June 13 (UPI) _ Michael Jackson will be taking home an Academy Award, but
not for the pop music or bizarre performances that have made him famous.
The enigmatic singer has plunked down
more than $1.5 million for the Best Picture Oscar producer David O. Selznick won
for "Gone With the Wind."
Until now, the most money anybody
had ever forked over for a piece of Hollywood memorabilia was $607,500. That's what
Steven Spielberg paid in 1996 for the statuette Clark Gable earned for "It Happened
One Night."
Jackson "won" his Oscar
at Saturday's Sotheby's auction in Manhattan after a price war with another telephone
bidder. He offered his bids through an agent.
Other items auctioned off were the
kitchen suite and Jackie Gleason's bus driver uniform from the classic TV show "The
Honeymooners."
The general manager of cable television's
"Nick at Night TV Land" bought the Kramdens' icebox, stove, sink, table
and chairs for $63,000.
Gleason's uniform sold for more than
$64,000.
