RIVERSIDE, June 12 (UPI) _ The four Riverside
police officers who shot and killed 19-year-old Tyisha Miller in December have been
informed that they will be fired.
The Los Angeles Times reports the notice
of termination was given by Police Chief Jerry Carroll Friday afternoon during a
meeting with the officers, and after a lengthy internal affairs review of the case.
The four officers, two of whom were still
probationary rookies when the shooting occurred, have ten days to appeal to keep
their jobs before the termination takes effect.
The two more senior officers can also request
an arbitration hearing to overturn the chief's decision.
The officers involved, Mike Alagna, Wayne
Stewart, Paul Bugar and Dan Hotard, have been on administrative leave with pay since
the shooting.
In May, the Riverside County District Attorney's
Office declined to file criminal charges against the officers, saying they may have
made tactical errors but prosecutors could find no evidence of criminal intent.
Miller's mother said she was "very
happy" with the news. "But my baby's gone and I still miss her," Delmer
Ruth Miller told the Times.
"I want those officers behind bars,"
she said. "This is just the beginning, and we believe we will eventually get
justice."
