LOS ANGELES, March 18 (UPI) _ "Shakespeare
In Love," about playwright William Shakespeare's fictional love affair with
an aspiring actress, heads the list of nominees up for Academy Awards for best picture.
The romantic comedy is up for a year-topping
13 Oscar awards and has already come away with several other prestigious awards,
including the Golden Globe for best comedy and the Screen Actors Guild Award for
outstanding cast in a motion picture.
Up against "Shakespeare In Love"
are another Elizabethan period drama "Elizabeth," and three World War II
era movies, "Saving Private Ryan," "The Thin Red Line" and "Life
Is Beautiful."
It's the only one of the five best picture
nominees with more than one nomination for acting.
Gwyneth Paltrow is up for best actress for
her role as Lady Viola, who disguises herself as a man in a desperate attempt to
be cast in Shakespeare's latest play and winds up falling in love with him.
Up for supporting honors are Judi Dench
as Queen Elizabeth and Geoffrey Rush as a theater owner who needs Shakespeare to
write a new play.
"Shakespeare In Love" is also
nominated for cinematography, art direction, costume design, directing, film editing,
makeup, original music or comedy score, sound and screenplay.
Screenwriters Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard
are considered favorites in the best original screenplay category following wins
at the Golden Globes and Writers Guild of America Awards.
